Frequently Asked Questions

Answering your Massage therapy treatments and general Clinic questions

If you are new to massage therapy and my clinic, I understand that you might have some questions.

Below are the answers to the questions that are most commonly asked about massage therapy treatment and my clinic.

Should you have additional questions please feel free to email me at nick@njrmt.com

Q: How will massage therapy benefit me?

A: With professional massage therapy, you can experience relief from muscular tension and pain, receive increased range of motion and a reduction of mental stress levels. Massage is a natural healing process that can deliver both physical and emotional benefits.Treatments are specifically tailored to meet your needs.

Q: How often will I need treatments?

A: Your body can let you know. Some people require only a few sessions to treat a specific problem, while others become regular users of massage therapy as both proactive and preventative healthcare. Massage can help maintain good muscle tone, flexibility, and help correct muscular injuries.

In my practice, I usually recommend scheduling your treatments on a monthly basis. This can be be adjusted with needs. You may know some parts of the year may require you to book more often for a variety of reasons (periodic job stress and demands / weather) so planning ahead, with your budget in mind, is a good idea, especially as my schedule tends to fill up quickly after nearly 20 years practicing.

I usually do not recommend booking too often, back to back, as the body needs to recover and adjust, so a 2 week waiting period is best, unless serious chronic issues are involved. In case of emergencies, allowing a few days for the body to settle is often much more appropriate than immediate treatment.

I will also not allow the booking of multiple treatments within a short time period at the end of the year, as I do not believe this to be appropriate.

Q: You seem quite busy and your schedule is filled up. Any chance to alter your schedule or for me to come in on the weekend?

A: The short answer is no. My schedule is as it is to protect my life / work balance, and to allow me to give my entire focus to you and your health, without negatively impacting my own, or my love for my chosen career. My apologies, I appreciate your understanding.

Q: Can you put me on the wait list for possible cancellations?

A: Yes, I can do that, and such requests will be handled on a first come / first serve manner. I will add that, fortunately, cancellations are few and far between, and because of this, I highly recommend booking ahead. Please email me at nick@njrmt.com with preferred days/hours.

Q: How long of a massage should I book?

A: I offer a variety of treatment length options, depending on your needs and scheduling.

45 to 60 minutes treatments are very popular options, and allow me to address a variety of issues, always including a relaxation component. These are not always a full body treatment, but can be made so in a more 'sports' related / faster movement / lesser depth manner. Typically, you will be treated while lying down for a while, followed by a time lying on your back after adjusting position.

90 minutes treatments are also quite popular, but I almost always recommend these for full body / multiple issues types of treatment, as working on a particular area for too long can prove a bit excessive, regardless of depth. These types of treatments (like every other treatment I offer) are often very relaxing.

Please remember that each massage will include an assessment and home care portion, lasting around 15 minutes, which are included in my fee.

New clients are encouraged to come to the clinic 10 minutes early to fill in their health history and for the initial assessment.

Q: How old does a person need to be to receive massage therapy?

A: Any age. Massage therapy treatments are effective from birth until palliative care stages, although I recommend seeking out specialists for infant massage specifically. My expertise lies in people aged 3-93+, with a focus on deep tissue / therapeutic (as opposed to relaxation focused treatments), and particularly, persons with disabilities.

Q: Which regions of my body get massaged?

A: I will ask you in detail what you want to get out of the session. You will also be asked to describe any acute or chronic problems that you are experiencing. This will help determine the appropriate regions of your body that need attention. A typical full-body massage involves your back, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, and hands.

Q: Will I experience muscle soreness following a massage therapy treatment?

A: Most people report feel very relaxed, and often experience significant relief from aches, pains and stress after a massage session. However some people, especially those who require deep-tissue massage, experience mild muscle soreness, which may last a day or two. Once the soreness is gone, they often notice heightened energy levels and an increased range of motion.

Q: I'm not sure I'm comfortable with a stranger touching me.

A: It is not uncommon for first-time clients to be apprehensive with the personal nature of massage therapy. Most clients lose this apprehension within the first few minutes of treatment. Massage therapists are trained professionals who respect your feelings and go out of their way to allow you to feel comfortable. Consent and communication are important throughout treatment. Adjustments can be made without any issues.

Q: What will I be wearing during treatment?

A: During a session, you will be fully covered / draped with a sheet and blanket. Only the area of your body that is being worked on is uncovered. This is not optional, but a Standard of Practice for RMTs in Ontario.

Before and after the session, you will undress and dress in complete privacy. One of the keys to the success of your massage therapy session is your ability to relax and feel comfortable. Therefore, the decision is yours; remove only the articles of clothing that you are comfortable with removing.

Q: Will my extended healthcare plan cover the costs of massage therapy treatments?

A: Yes. Most extended healthcare plans include massage therapy and some even have on-line billing. Some plans ask you to first receive a physician's referral. Refer to your benefit plan for further detail. Please note, I DO NOT offer direct billing.

Q: Do you offer massage gift certificates?

A: No, I do not offer gift certificates.

Q: Where should I park when I come to your clinic?

A: There will always be a parking space available to you, to the right side of the driveway of my clinic. Please pull up the whole way, as to not block the other vehicle. There is also the option to park in front of the house on our cul-de-sac.
